Resort
The resort is lovely, and the service is good. The island is green, and it is nice and tidy everywhere. I do not think it is a 5-star resort as it misses gym, pool, pool-villas, but it is perfectly fine for me. I do not need anything more, but people seeking 5* luxury would probably be dissapointed. I was not!
Room
The room is simple but nice and clean. The outdoor bathroom is spacious but lacks a bit of atmosphere, for example, plants. There are lovely chairs and a sofa on the terrace.
Food
A good selection of food that changes daily with weekly rotation. Food was overall delicious. But after 12 days i got a bit bored... The minibar is included which is nice.
Snorkeling
The house reef is the reason we booked this resort, and it did not disappoint! Loved that there are on-site marine biologists, who do a lot to educate guests on how to protect the fish and corals. Loved the educational print out in the room.
Diving
My husband had 8 dives and was very satisfied with both the dives and the service at the dive center.
Activities
There are many included activities throughout the day and evening which was nicely balanced for different needs.
Spa
Very good massages - but quite expensive

If you're looking for a Maldives island that checks almost every box, Diamonds Athuruga might just be your perfect match.
The trifecta:
· A top-tier house reef with vibrant, healthy corals and abundant marine life (a rare sight these days).
· A beautiful white-sand beach that feels amazing to walk on barefoot.
· A stunning lagoon where the blue shifts from pale Tiffany blue to deep navy—all in one view.
It's not easy to find an island that delivers great house reef, sandy beach, and lagoon views all at once, but Athuruga pulls it off.
Beyond nature:
· Location, excursion options, restaurants, villas, greenery, and service are all solid.
· Off-season rates are very reasonable—great value for what you get.
Verdict: If you want a mid-range-priced island with excellent snorkeling and no major weak spots, Diamonds Athuruga is a strong contender.
---
Biggest highlight:
The island has its own Marine Lab with resident marine biologists, including the renowned Inga Dehnert. While most resort reefs in the Maldives suffer from severe coral bleaching due to climate change, Athuruga's reef remains remarkably healthy—thanks to their ongoing conservation efforts. You can even join a coral planting activity—a meaningful and memorable experience.
---
Biggest drawback:
While the on-island staff are friendly, helpful, and efficient in person, the pre-arrival booking process is a different story. Errors in reservations are common, and online communication channels are often unreliable. So don't expect a hassle-free experience before you set foot on the island—it's not as smooth as you'd hope.

From the very first moment until our departure, our stay at Diamonds Athuruga Island was truly exceptional. This island combines a breathtaking setting with a level of service that is second to none.
Diamonds Athuruga is Italian-owned, which is reflected in its outstanding culinary offerings. The pizzas and pasta dishes are excellent. I would particularly like to highlight General Manager Hannes Ellerbrock, who leads the resort with great professionalism and genuine passion. It is clear that not only the satisfaction of his guests matters deeply to him, but also the respectful preservation of the island’s unique natural environment.
What truly makes Athuruga special are its people. Every single member of the team treats guests with remarkable warmth, genuine attentiveness, and heartfelt hospitality. Nothing feels staged or routine; instead, from the very first moment, you can sense the enthusiasm and pride with which everyone works. From day one, you feel welcome, valued, and exceptionally well cared for.
A special thank you goes to Hannes, Nils, Mazin, Lea, Elena, and Titu, as well as the outstanding bar team. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to all the chefs and every member of the service staff. Your dedication, kindness, and professionalism made our stay truly memorable and played a significant role in creating unforgettable days on Athuruga.
Our water villa was beautifully situated, impeccably maintained, and offered, of course, spectacular views of the turquoise ocean. The dining experience impressed us throughout our entire stay. The quality, freshness, variety, and presentation of the food were consistently of the highest standard.
Another absolute highlight is the underwater world surrounding the island. For us, the house reef ranks among the most beautiful we have ever experienced in the Maldives. The biodiversity is impressive, and every snorkeling excursion brings new and fascinating encounters.
During our stay, our daughter completed her diving certification with Nils, and she returned from every single dive absolutely thrilled. Nils is an exceptionally knowledgeable, calm, and professional diving instructor who perfectly combines safety, expertise, and enthusiasm. He provided her with unforgettable experiences that she will cherish for a lifetime.
Athuruga is one of those rare places where nature, comfort, cuisine, and service come together in perfect harmony. Anyone seeking relaxation, tranquility, and the highest standards of quality will find exactly that here.
Our heartfelt thanks go to the entire team for the outstanding care and hospitality. We leave with wonderful memories and extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to making our stay truly unforgettable. We are certain that we will be back.
