Our Marine Lab Athuruga is situated right next to the ocean and it combines active marine research with educational guest experiences. Here, our guests are not only able to see science in action but also contribute to data collection through citizen science projects and get hands-on experience in coral restoration.

As a result of the ongoing collaboration between Diamonds Athuruga and MaRHE Center of the University of Milano-Bicocca, the Marine Lab has been an integral part of the island. It has hosted many researchers and interesting projects over the years, resulting in international publications and recognition. Our resident and visiting scientists bring modern research techniques in reach of the public by providing hands-on experiences, enlightening talks and dedicated workshops for our guests.

Would you like to know a little more about the amazing marine life surrounding our housereef and the best places to spot them? Visit our dedicated marine biology evenings, where you can pick up some exciting marine fun facts while enjoying a delicious cocktail. Join the marine biologists when we venture out to snorkel with the Maldives’ charismatic megafauna, including whale sharks, mantas and turtles and contribute to our identification studies with your underwater footage. Become a marine biologist yourself for a day and help our team to assess reef health, to study the marine creatures, big and small, around our island or help to regrow corals on our coral nurseries.  Our guests can also experience the virtual reality of diving on a pristine coral reef or swimming among the biggest and most elusive creatures of the ocean.

Finally, at the heart of our marine biology activities is the protection and rehabilitation of coral reefs. Our large-scale coral restoration project was established in 2018 and has been accompanied by active research. Since then, it has steadily grown into our current project: Coral Connection!

Learn all about corals and how to save them and get hands-on experience in coral restoration practices. You can also adopt and plant your own “Coral Cookie” and receive photos and a certificate as a little holiday memory or a gift for your loved ones at home!
